Hi Finley,

Thanks for your recycling question.

Barbed wire is in a different type and form of metal than what is accepted in your recycling bin. Long, thin items such as rope, cords and wire can become jammed in the machinery, causing damage and delays at the recycling facility. Instead, it is recommended to dispose of barbed wire in your garbage bin at home or by taking it down to the local tip for disposal as you suggest.

Alternatively, a local scrap metal company may be interested in collecting your wire fencing and other scrap metal items around your home depending on certain variables such as quantity and iron content.

There is a finite amount of metal in the earth so recycling scrap metals preserves natural resources and makes the best possible use of available resources. It requires less energy to recycle metal than manufacture new products using virgin raw materials and it can be recycled again and again.

Not all metal products can be recycled in your home recycling bin. Please take any scrap metal to a nominated location or contact your local council if we haven’t found a recycler close by.

I hope this is useful.

Thanks Murphy
