In some council areas, rigid plastic lids smaller than a yogurt tub lid must be removed from the container and placed in the general waste bin. This is because small items can slip through the gaps in collection and sorting equipment and may not be successfully recycled.
In other areas, it's better to leave the lid on the container so it can be recycled together as one unit.
Additionally, some charitable organisations and school groups collect plastic lids marked #2 or #4, which can be shredded and made into new products.
