Plastic straws are not accepted in kerbside recycling bins because:

  • They are too small and lightweight, which means they often fall through the gaps in sorting machinery.

  • They can contaminate recycling streams or get stuck in equipment, causing operational issues.

  • Most are made from non-recyclable plastic types, making recovery difficult even if they are sorted.

The best option is to avoid single-use plastic straws altogether and switch to reusable alternatives.
