Recycling symbols can be confusing because they often look similar but mean very different things. A common example is the resin identification code — the number inside the chasing arrows on plastic products. While it looks like the universal recycling symbol (the mobius loop), it's not actually a guarantee that the item is recyclable.
These codes are simply used to identify the type of plastic, not whether it can be processed by your local recycling facility. Unfortunately, this leads many people to assume an item is recyclable when it’s not, contributing to contamination in the recycling stream.
